Be aware of the distances!

Although Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, travel times can often be longer than expected. The roads are scenic, but also winding and sometimes narrow, which slows down the average speed. This means that you can take your time here and enjoy the surroundings at your leisure - in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere of the country.

Some typical routes and their estimated travel times:

  • Colombo to Kandy (approx. 115 km): This journey takes around 3-4 hours by car or bus. The route leads through hilly landscapes and offers the first glimpses of Sri Lanka's green nature.
  • Kandy to Ella (approx. 135 km): The train is the preferred choice here. The picturesque route takes around 6 hours and is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, with views of tea plantations, waterfalls and mountains.
  • Colombo to Galle (approx. 120 km): Along the well-developed coastal road, you can reach Galle in around 2 hours by car. Here you can make quick progress and enjoy the sea views.
  • Colombo to Sigiriya (approx. 170 km): This route takes around 4 hours by car and leads to one of Sri Lanka's cultural highlights.

Keep this in mind when planning your trip so that your vacation doesn't turn into stress.

Check travel and safety instructions

It doesn't hurt to take a quick look at the website of the Federal Foreign Office. There you will find up-to-date information on the security situation, entry requirements and everything that is currently going on in Sri Lanka. Better informed than surprised, right?

Check the validity of your passport

Make sure that your passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay.

To travel to Sri Lanka, German citizens require a valid passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. The passport is the main document for entry, and a temporary passport is also recognized if it has the same period of validity.

In addition, a tourist visa is required, which can be conveniently applied for online via the electronic system ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). The ETA visa allows a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended locally if necessary. Travelers should also make sure that their passport contains several blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

For visa applications and detailed information on entering the country, we recommend reading the next section Applying for a visa 😉

Apply for a visa

As the processing time can vary, it is advisable to do this as soon as the travel period has been determined.

Check vaccinations

Check your vaccination status and get vaccinated if necessary. Some vaccinations need to be administered in several doses, which takes time. You can find more information in our guide to recommended vaccinations for Sri Lanka.

Which type of plug for your trip to Sri Lanka?

Are you planning a trip to Sri Lanka and wondering whether your charger will fit? Sri Lanka uses a special type of plug and a different voltage to Europe - the right preparation will help you avoid any nasty surprises. In this article, you will find out which adapter you need, what the local voltage is and which devices you can connect without any problems. So you'll be well prepared for your time on the island!

Backpack or suitcase

Whether you should take a backpack or a suitcase for Sri Lanka depends on how you want to travel around the country. If you plan to be flexible and adventurous, a backpack is often the better choice. It is more practical, especially on unpaved roads and for spontaneous adventures - you can carry it comfortably, it is easy to store and offers you more freedom of movement. A backpack is ideal if you travel a lot on public transport such as trains or buses, as it is easy to handle in confined spaces.

A suitcase is more suitable if you are mainly staying in hotels or resorts and don't have to worry so much about uneven terrain. A sturdy wheeled suitcase is particularly practical if you are traveling with private transfers and not walking long distances. Make sure your suitcase has robust wheels and a sturdy handle so that you can transport it easily even on uneven surfaces.

Compromise: A travel backpack with wheels
If you can't decide, a backpack with wheels is a good alternative. This gives you the flexibility of a backpack and the comfort of a suitcase in one - ideal for Sri Lanka's varied landscapes and transportation conditions.

To summarize:

  • Backpack for adventure, flexible travel and uncomplicated transportation by public transport.
  • Suitcases for more comfort and stays in fixed accommodation with private transfers.

Regardless of your choice, it is advisable to take a waterproof bag with you - Sri Lanka's tropical climate occasionally brings surprises!
