Since August 2025, new regulations have been in force for driving in Sri Lanka:
Tourists are only allowed to drive without an additional document if they have an international Driver's license (IDP) and carry their national driver's license.
If you only have a national driving license, you have to apply for a temporary driving permit. These are now not only available from the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera (near Colombo), but also directly at the airport (BIA) - quickly, easily and before you pick up your rental car.
Costs: approx. 2,000 LKR (around 6 €)
Validity: 30 days, extendable
Required: national driver's license, passport, passport photo
⚠️ Anyone driving without a valid permit risks fines, vehicle immobilization and loss of insurance cover.
👉 Tip: If you have an IDP, you no longer need a permit - you can set off straight away.
