The effect of Samahan tea
In Sri Lanka and India, the origin of the herbal tea, Samahan is drunk primarily at the first signs of a cold.
As soon as a cough, aching limbs or a cold are on the way, the tea is prepared to strengthen the immune system.
However, the tea is served in Sri Lanka Samahan tea is not only drunk when feeling unwell, but is consumed regularly. Samahan tea is said to have a regulating effect on the metabolism, digestion and relaxes the muscles and can prevent infections and colds.
Although Samahan tea consists of 100% natural ingredients (see below), a few side effects can always occur.
Ginger has a positive effect on the intestinal flora and helps with digestion.
However, the pungency of the ginger root's essential oils can irritate the stomach lining, leading to flatulence and diarrhea.
As with everything else, if you experience any side effects, don't take it. If the cold does not get better, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
Our experience with Samahan tea
We tried Samahan tea for the first time on our adventure. Trip to Sri Lanka when we had breakfast with a family in a homestay. The hostess's son had prepared the herbal tea as he had developed a sore throat.
Curious as we are, we naturally wanted to try the instant herbal tea. It tasted very good.
The hostess informed us about the effects of the tea, which is why we immediately bought a few packets from the supermarket in Ella and prepared ourselves for the winter time in Germany.
We have been drinking the tea almost every day since the fall and for the first time in 10 years we survived the flu epidemic at the Munich Oktoberfest unscathed.
I can't say whether this was really due to the tea or the fact that the temperatures this year in September and October were rather late summery. But the fact is that we still didn't have a cold at the beginning of January.
As the 100% tea is natural, there is no reason why it should not be taken regularly.
Preparation of Samahan tea
Preparation is super easy! Tear open the packet, put the granules in a cup, pour hot water over them and stir. Done. The granules dissolve super quickly and the herbal tea can be drunk immediately. You don't need to leave the Samahan herbal tea to infuse.
Samahan tea with milk
In Sri Lanka The preparation with milk is also very popular.
Here you can probably feel the influence of the English in the former Ceylon, who, as is well known, like to drink their tea with milk.
To prepare, simply pour warm milk over the contents of two packets of instant tea and stir briefly.
If you like, you can add a milk foam and sprinkle with Ceylon cinnamon.
The milk version is strongly reminiscent of an Indian chai tea.

Samahan tea - The origin
The original recipe for Samahan tea comes from India and is over a thousand years old.
What does Samahan tea taste like?
The herbal tea tastes spicy and the ginger is clearly noticeable.
However, the spiciness cannot be compared to a ginger shot, it is not unpleasant but rather invigorating.
Of course, you can also clearly taste the cane sugar.
Ingredients - 100% natural
The Samahan tea from Sri Lanka is made from 14 spices and herbs.
Incidentally, one of the main ingredients in the tea is ginger. Which is why the tea tastes a little spicy.
If you add a little lemon juice to the tea, you can tone down the spiciness a little.
