Tour description Ettaler Mandl
The Ettaler Mandl (1633m) is a small rocky peak in the Ammergau Alps and is probably one of the best-known peaks among Munich's local mountains.
We would classify the hike to the rocky head as easy due to the relatively short tour.
If you have a good general level of fitness, you can climb the Ettaler Mandl in two hours. The descent takes about 1 1/2 hours.
Directions to the Ettaler Manndl
Autobahn A95 from Munich towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
At the end of the highway in Oberau, turn off towards Oberammergau and continue to Ettal.
At the monastery wall, turn right into Mandlweg and park here.
The parking lot here is subject to charges. (parking machine with coin slot)
Ascent - The tour starts
From the parking lot, follow the Mandlweg past the show dairy on the right.
In the show dairy, you can visit local and traditional cheese production and of course taste and buy the cheese.
After the show dairy, a forest path begins, which you now follow uphill past a small Kneipp footbath facility at the edge of the forest. On the way back, you can "pedal" a few laps here and cool down your legs. It's really good for you! The pool is constantly supplied with fresh spring water and is a refreshing 9°C.
At the upper end of the climb you reach the "Ettaler Weibl", the pre-summit of the "Ettaler Mandl".
Here you have to descend briefly into a saddle before climbing the last few meters to the summit of the Ettaler Mandl.
Don't worry, you don't have to memorize the route description, you can clearly see where you have to go.
The summit of the Ettaler Mandl - via ferrata A/B
If you want to climb to the summit cross of the Ettaler Mandl, there is a short via ferrata of approx. 15 minutes.
But be careful! Although the via ferrata is classified as category A/B, it should not be underestimated under any circumstances.
As falls and fatalities occur here almost every year, we strongly advise that you only climb the via ferrata with a climbing harness and helmet. The via ferrata leads steeply upwards with steel cables. Sometimes there are traffic jams due to oncoming traffic on the via ferrata.
The rock is very greasy in places and slippery even in dry conditions.
You should never climb the via ferrata on the Ettaler Mandl in wet weather conditions.
Once you reach the top, a fantastic 360° panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the Zugspitze massif awaits you.
But even without tackling the via ferrata, the hike to the Ettaler Mandl is a beautiful mountain tour and definitely recommended.
Descent from the Ettaler Manndl
The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
However, if you would like to stop off at the Laberjoch mountain restaurant or take the cable car back down, you will need to make a short detour.
You first walk back the same way, then turn right at the first fork in the path towards "Laber". After approx. 15 minutes, you will reach the mountain station with restaurant and cable car. Please note that the cable car arrives in Oberammergau and not in Ettal. If necessary, you can take the bus to the parking lot.
If you choose the same descent as the ascent, don't forget the Kneipp tour mentioned above!
Mountain railroad to the Ettaler Mandl
If even the short mountain tour is too strenuous for you, you can also take the Laber mountain railroad up the mountain.
However, the starting point is then Oberammergau and not Ettal.
From the mountain station, it's a 20-minute walk to the Etaller Mandl via ferrata.
You can find more information about the mountain railroad here:
